Why time is a dozen…

5 September 2021 by Hanneli Slabber 1 Comment

In The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Douglas Adams writes that the answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe and everything is 42….  I think it is 12. There are 12 months in the year, our days are divided into two sets of 12 hours each, there are 12 stars on the EU flag, 12 days of Christmas, Jesus had 12 apostles and Islam has the 12 Imams that … [Read more...] about Why time is a dozen…

They are not kidding when they say wash whites separately

3 April 2022 by Hanneli Slabber Leave a Comment

When my brother left for university 30 years ago, my mother gave him a solid piece of advice:  They are not kidding when they say wash whites separately. Nobody ever asked who 'they' was, but we all at one or another time cursed ourselves for not listening to them! Anybody who has ever had a white shirt with a faint blush tint is now a life-long clothes … [Read more...] about They are not kidding when they say wash whites separately

Thing 4:  Mom, I have a topic for your new blog … [Read more...] about I bet you – and you and you and you

Why does a shower make you dirty?

31 December 2021 by Hanneli Slabber Leave a Comment

Showers and bathing seem to have received more than their regular coverage during 2021, and it wasn't only celebrities that talked about the frequency and necessity of cleaning. I am old, so I grew up with the 'cleanliness next to godliness' in the literal sense. My generation never went to bed dirty and always wore good underwear 'in case you are in an accident'. The upside is … [Read more...] about Why does a shower make you dirty?

So who said PEMDAS is right?

14 December 2021 by Hanneli Slabber Leave a Comment

We have all seen the internet memes and questions asking you to use PEMDAS to solve the question or riddle.  I watched a friend of mine doing homework with her little one, and he kept questioning, ‘yes, but who said we must do it like this?”  Yes, exactly; who said we must do it like this? For those of us that went to school in the pre-PEMDAS era, this … [Read more...] about So who said PEMDAS is right?
